What Grok actually costs.

Grok has the messiest pricing ladder of the major tools — multiple subscription tiers, one of the cheapest APIs around, and a "free credits" program with a catch. Here's the honest map, with real August 2026 numbers.

01 The plans

PlanPriceNotes
Free$0Limited Grok access
SuperGrok$30/mo ($300/yr)Standalone power access — the main paid tier
X Premium+$40/moGrok bundled with X (Twitter) premium features
SuperGrok Heavy$300/moMaximum access — for the heaviest users

Note SuperGrok ($30) is pricier than the $20 standard tier elsewhere, and there are multiple doors in (standalone vs via X). Pick the one that matches how you actually use it — don't pay for X Premium+ if you just want Grok.

Update — August 2026: the plan names now decide which products you get, not just how many messages. Two access changes landed in the same week, and they pull in opposite directions:

ProductWho has it (as of Aug 21, 2026)Source
Build ModeEvery plan, including Free — web, iOS and Android. Was SuperGrok Heavy early beta until Aug 19.SpaceXAI, Aug 19
Grok BotSuperGrok Plus, SuperGrok Heavy, Cursor Pro+, Cursor Ultra, Cursor Teams (Standard and Premium). Enterprise: waitlist. No free tier.SpaceXAI, Aug 21

Two honest caveats on the table above. First, SuperGrok Plus is a tier SpaceXAI now names in its own announcements but does not publish a price for on its public pages — we are not going to invent one, so check the rate card in your account before you assume where it sits. Second, agent products are the fastest-moving line item in Grok's pricing: what a plan includes changed twice in three days in August. Re-check entitlements before you upgrade for a feature.

02 Pay-per-use (the API) — genuinely cheap

Here's Grok's real edge: the API is one of the cheapest of any frontier model. Per million tokens (input / output):

ModelInput / Output (per 1M)
Grok 4.6 (current flagship)$2 / $6 — a fast variant costs twice that
Grok 4.5$2 / $6
Grok 4.1 Fast$0.20 / $0.50
Grok 3$3 / $15

Grok 4.1 Fast is roughly 10× cheaper than most rivals' everyday models — which makes it a strong pick for high-volume, automated work where cost matters more than the absolute frontier.

The flagship line held its price twice running. Grok 4.5 launched at $2/$6 on July 8, 2026, and Grok 4.6 shipped on August 12, 2026 at exactly the same rate — unusual in a year where most labs raised the flagship tier. That is the number worth remembering about Grok: a frontier-band model priced like a mid-tier one.

One thing to watch: "starting at $2/$6" is a starting price. SpaceXAI sells a fast variant of 4.6 at double the rate, and providers routinely apply different rates to very long prompts. Before you budget from a headline number, open your own console's rate card and check which band your typical request actually falls into.

03 What a prompt actually costs

On the cheap model, even heavy usage barely registers — which is exactly why builders eye it for volume.

04 The "free credits" trade — read this

xAI offers up to $175/month in free API credits through a data-sharing program. The catch: your API prompts and outputs can be used to train xAI's models.

"Free credits" makes the data flow invisible — it feels like you're getting something, not giving something. For hobby projects on public data, $2,100/year of free compute can be a fine trade. For anything touching client info, business data, or ideas you'd rather not donate, it's not a good trade at any price. The rule: if you wouldn't paste it into a public forum, don't run it through a training-enabled tier.

05 Which is right for you?

  • Just want Grok in chat: Free, or SuperGrok ($30) if you hit limits.
  • Already pay for X: X Premium+ ($40) bundles it.
  • Builder / high-volume: the API on Grok 4.1 Fast — cheapest in class. Decline the data-sharing tier for anything sensitive.

The $5 experiment

Open an xAI console account, set a $5 cap, and run your three hardest prompts on Grok 4.1 Fast — declining the data-sharing program so your prompts stay yours. You'll see both the model quality and just how little the usage costs.

What you can do now

  • Untangle the tiers: Free, SuperGrok $30, X Premium+ $40, Heavy $300
  • Know the API is cheap — Grok 4.1 Fast at $0.20 / $0.50, flagship 4.6 at $2 / $6 per million
  • Price the free-credits trade correctly: compute for training data
  • Decline data-sharing for anything client or business sensitive
